Manjaro-Turkey Community is happy to announce Manjaro Cinnamon/Gnome Community Edition 2013.05 based on Manjaro Stable-Repositories.

It features the brand new Gnome 3.8 point release and Cinnamon 1.7. All packages got updated and the manjaro-tools got better integrated into the system. Issues with mhwd got fixed.

Gnome 3.8 is an intuitive desktop environment that utilises a tablet or smartphone style interface to access applications. It is not compatible with compiz. Although Gnome is very easy to learn and use, its customisation options are quite limited, and it can be difficult to configure. A 64 bit installation of Manjaro running Gnome uses about 220MB of memory.

Cinnamon 1.7.2 is a desktop environment based on Gnome 3 that utilises a large panel-style menu to access applications. It is not compatible with compiz. Despite being based on Gnome, it has more customisation options and is easier to configure. Users of Windows Vista or Windows 7 may find Cinnamon’s interface comfortably familiar. A 64 bit installation of Manjaro running Cinnamon uses about 350MB of memory.

Manjaro-Turkey Community is happy to announce Manjaro Mate Community Edition 2013.05 based on Manjaro Stable-Repositories.

MATE (pronounced ‘Mah-tay’) is best known for its use in the popular Linux Mint distribution. Similar to the XFCE desktop environment, a 64 bit installation of Manjaro running MATE uses about 200MB of memory. MATE itself was developed to appease users of the Gnome 2 desktop after the radical transformation of Gnome 3 into a tablet-like interface.

MATE 1.6 comes with a long list of changes, but nothing like the laundry list of major fixes like in previous updates. Systemd-logind support has been added, Caja has had some minor tweaks, and functionality has been added to the panel.

A lot of work went into our graphical installer we have forked from Linux Mint. Thanks flies out to Clement and his team. We tweaked it a little to fit for Archlinux based Distros. For now only installation on one harddrive is properly supported, but you can mount other other partitions by hand if you choose the manual option. We recommend to use our cli-installers for this matter, which offers still all the features like efi-support and makes it possible to install Manjaro on your Macs.

A common problem with every Linux Distribution is the installation of language localisation packages. With our graphical tool Manjaro Settings Manager we want to make that as easy as possible. Therefore we created nice wizards which will guide you through each step. We will notify you when a new language package came available. Also you can change your system language, keyboard layouts and user management with Manjaro Settings Mananger quite comfortable.

To make the keyboard layout setup as simple as possible we created kbctl, a cli-tool you can set your keyboard to american standard with, for example followed cmd: ‘kbctl -l us‘ – it sets the proper layout for X11 and your console, plus loads it asap.

Pamac, our default graphical package manager, got updated and several bugs got fixed. New features are:

all panels are resizeable

packages list is now better displayed with icons

packages can now be sorted by groups, repos, or state (installed, uninstalled, orphans)

a size column has been added (corresponding to installed size in all cases).

the real download size is display now in ConfDialog and in updater window.

interactive search on name is available in package list panel (choose a long list like “Installed”, click on any package, then type “pacman” on your keyboard).

orphans are kept by pamac and not uninstalled anymore

orphans get now listed and can be removed manually

now translated in : Catalan, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese of Brazil, Romanian, Spanish, Turkish

Alexandre Albuquerque Arnt created Octopi, a powerful tool to manage (Arch | Manjaro) Linux packages. It has a simple interface which consists of just 2 panels:

A list of all available packages

And a tab widget showing 6 useful tabs: information, files, transaction, output, news and a quick help guide.

More info about Octopi you can find on the project homepage.

With this update we adjusted or install medias to the new repository structure we have now. This release features GTK 3.8, updated graphical installer and includes all updates from the 5th May 2013. Also we fixed slight issues we found in our initial release of Manjaro 0.8.5 and our first maintenance release 0.8.5.1.

If you managed to update your current Manjaro 0.8.5 installation, there is no need to reinstall your system. These install-medias are created to ease up the installation for new Manjaro users.

Followed changes are made since Manjaro 0.8.5:

Graphical installer updated and translated to followed locales: ca, de, el, en, es, it, pt_BR, pt_PT and ro

Manjaro Settings Manager updated

Linux 3.8.11 as our kernel

GTK 3.8 update

Xorg 1.14.1

SystemD 202

Security issue solved

Followed changes are made since Manjaro 0.8.4:

Graphical installer introduced

Manjaro Settings Manager introduced

LXDM/Slim as display manager

Proprietary driver support for AMD and Nvidia graphic cards

Additional multimedia support, applications, and access to the AUR have been pre-installed

We hope you enjoy the latest and greatest iteration of Manjaro Linux so far!

Kind regards

Philip Müller and the Manjaro Developers Team

In essence a refined combination of the previous Openbox-Synapse and Openbox-Lite, this release encompasses a lot of changes from the previous releases, including:

Full multimedia support

Additional multimedia applications, including Qupzilla, Pamac, VLC, and XNoise

Revised obmenu-generater based menu

A brand new look based around AngieMyst’s wonderful “light vines” image

To keep the ISO file size as light as possible, the automatic detection and configuration of graphics cards is not undertaken during the installation process. However, once installed, the appropriate graphics driver can be automatically detected and installed by entering the one of the following commands in the terminal:

sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

or

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

More information can be found in the wiki guide concerning the installation of graphics cards. Those with AMD / Catalyst graphics cards should also review this guide.

We are happy to announce a maintenance release for Manjaro 0.8.5, released two weeks ago. With this update we adjusted or install medias to the new repository structure we have now. This will ease the installation of Manjaro Linux for new users a lot. This release features pacman 4.1 and includes all updates from the 25th April 2013. Also we fixed slight issues we found in our initial release of Manjaro 0.8.5.

If you managed to update your current Manjaro 0.8.5 installation, there is no need to reinstall your system. These install-medias are created to ease up the installation for new Manjaro users.

Followed changes are made since Manjaro 0.8.5:

Graphical installer updated and translated to followed locales: ca, el, en, es, it, pt_BR and ro

Manjaro Settings Manager updated

Linux 3.8.8 as our kernel

Xorg 1.14.1

Security issue solved

Followed changes are made since Manjaro 0.8.4:

Graphical installer introduced

Manjaro Settings Manager introduced

LXDM/Slim as display manager

SystemD 198

We shipped since the introduction of package signing static private keys on our install medias. An attacker who is able to obtain or guess those keys can sign packages that pacman will accept as valid. Those static keys got generated during the creation of our installation medias by ManjaroISO. This shouldn’t compromise but affects the security of your installation disks. The risk you have starts during using those keys, since they are known by the public.

We created a package called pacman-init based on the code found in ArchISO. It is a service for systemd that initializes a new random GnuPG key on every boot. /etc/pacman.d/gnupg is now stored in RAM using tmpfs and therefor not persistent. With this change the PGP key pair stored there is unique to your machine. This fix is already added in ManjaroISO and will be automatically applied on our your system with the next package update you should do anytime soon.

We recommend to update your system or regenerate your gpg-keys with:

$ rm -rf /etc/pacman.d/gnupg
$ pacman-key --init
$ pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro

Make sure pacman’s PGP keys in /etc/pacman.d/gnupg are random and remain secret.

Without Pierre Schmitz, an Archlinux Developer, we would have this security risk a long time. We are not prefect – those things shouldn’t happen at all. Since a lot of our users already generated those keys on their own, the risk should be minimal and shouldn’t affect our community much.

You can discuss this in our forum.

We are happy to announce three new Manjaro Community Editions featuring Mate 1.6, LXDE 0.5.5 and KDE 4.10.2. “Community Editions” of Manjaro Linux are released as bonus flavours in addition to those officially supported and maintained by the Manjaro Team, provided that the time and resources necessary are available to do so.

Yusuf and Cumali from Manjaro-Turkey released Manjaro KDE Community Edition 2013.04 based on Manjaro Stable-Repositories. It features the brand new KDE SC 4.10.2 point release. The over 100 recorded bugfixes in this release include improvements to the Personal Information Management suite Kontact, the Window Manager KWin, and others. KDE’s Development Platform has received a number of updates that affect multiple applications. The complete changes are listed on KDE’s issue tracker.

Notable packages included:

kdebase-workspace 4.10.2

linux38 3.8.8 (3.8.6-1 on i686)

manjaro-settings-manager 0.1.1

mhwd 0.2.5

octopi 0.1.0408

pamac 0.7.0

systemd 198 (systemd-next 201 on i686)

xorg-server 1.14.1

LXDE is a super-lightweight desktop environment that is very similar to XFCE, with the exception that it is not compatible with Compiz. As with XFCE, LXDE is also a somewhat basic desktop environment, lacking some modern features that would be expected, such as a search-bar to find applications and files. However, it is also an excellent choice for less powerful computers, as a 64 bit installation of Manjaro running LXDE uses only about 150MB of memory.

Version 1.6 comes with a long list of changes, but nothing like the laundry list of major fixes like in previous updates. Systemd-logind support has been added, Caja has had some minor tweaks, and functionality has been added to the panel. Download the install medias and give it a spin.
